Rheumatology

The Wessex Training programme for Rheumatology has been established for many years and offers training in Rheumatology alone (four year training programme) or Rheumatology in combination with General Internal Medicine (five year training programme). The training programme has an entry level at ST 3.

A doctor checks a patient's hand in hospital. The Wessex Rheumatology programme provides trainees with exposure to all aspects of the rheumatology curriculum and training in pure Rheumatology is provided by Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Poole and Winchester. Posts recognised for dual accreditation in Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine are provided at the Isle of Wight, Salisbury, Basingstoke and Southampton. There is also opportunity to gain some experience in paediatric rheumatology in many of our posts within Wessex.

There are ample opportunities for research within the Wessex Region and for the past five years Rheumatology in Wessex has been allocated academic clinical fellow posts. A high percentage of Wessex Rheumatology trainees complete higher degrees and there is a good final placement record from our training programme, including academic placements. All posts on the programme have an active teaching and audit programme.
