Rotation Information

The Wessex Training Programme in gastroenterology is a five year rotation across the region, with placements decided on an annual basis at the RITAs, with each trainee participating in placement preference. The rotation is the first Wednesday in September.  There is a well-established gastrointestinal training programme which Specialist Registrars are asked to attend and provision is made for this.  An example of the on-going programme of education is included. There is a strong local Gut Club, which meets after two of the training days.  Research is encouraged and candidates should declare their interest as soon as possible.

The programme has been designed to reflect the new training curriculum as outlined by the Royal College of Physicians (JCHMT) and the British Society of Gastroenterology.

The aim of the curriculum is to provide a comprehensive and structured training programme in Gastroenterology and Hepatology for those who have completed general professional training to enable them to acquire a CCT in Specialist Gastroenterology.  In addition, training will be provided in general medicine in all posts so that trainees will also be eligible for a CCT in general internal medicine.  These Registrar posts will have a strong emphasis on training and a smaller service commitment than the former Registrar grades.  Trainee assessment will be on an annual basis and is compiled from reports from the Local Training Supervisor. These will be based on interviews enabling two way feedback for both the trainee and the training programmes.

Study and Training

The primary aim of all posts is the development of the trainee and this is supported by the regional syllabus and minimum standards of education agreed by all Trusts within the rotation.

The Deanery is committed to developing postgraduate training programmes as laid down by PMETB, Colleges and Faculties and by COPMED - the Postgraduate Deans Network. At local level college/specialty tutors work with the Programme Director and Directors of Medical Education in supervising these programmes. Trainees will be expected to take part in these programmes (including audit) and to attend meetings with their nominated educational supervisor.

All posts within the training programme are recognised for postgraduate training by the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB) in accordance with their standards for training.

Study leave is granted in accordance with Deanery / Trust policy and are subject to the maintenance of the service.

All posts have a service element and the following covers the majority of duties. There will be minor variations in different hospitals but the list is aimed at covering the majority of duties:
