Forensic Psychiatry

Psychiatry illustrationForensic Psychiatry training in Wessex is provided by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and there are five forensic posts in total.

Wessex offers some expectional training opportunities in Forensic Psychiatry.

The main strengths of the rotation are accessed to medicolegal aspects of forensic work and prison psychiatry.

We have long held established relationships with both HMP Winchester and HMP Isle of Wight and all trainees will rotate through these prisons during their rotation.

We also have two Consultant Forensic Psychotherapists and are therefore able to provide unrivalled opportunities in this important area of clinical practice.

Most of the training takes place at Ravenswood House Medium Secure Unit in Fareham. However all trainees will rotate through the Southfield Low Secure Uinit in Southampton and will also spend a period of time at Broadmoor High Secure Hospital in Berkshire.

There are opportunities for involvement in adolescent forensic psychiatry in the region. There are forensic CAMHS services in the region and trainees can also undertake special interest placements at Bluebird House Medium Secure Adolescent Unit in Southampton.

You will be encouraged to undertake research. Many of our trainees undertake a Master’s Degree in relevant subjects such as Mental Health Law, Medical Education and Ethics.

Our whole programme aims to be challenging, stimulating and is designed to support you to develop strong personal and professional skills as a Consultant.
