It is important that all applicants to the 2020 foundation programme read the information provided in the UKFPO FP/AFP 2020 applicant handbook which is available to download from the UKFPO website.

 AFPs available in Wessex

There are 13 academic foundation programmes in research available in Wessex. The majority of research opportunities are independent from the clinical rotations. This permits the applicant to select the most suitable combination of research area and clinical rotation. The purpose of this is to match the research opportunities to the most suitable candidates rather than placing them in fixed programme choices.

The successful candidates will be allocated rotations and academic research projects in accordance with their preference and score. Some academic units will have more than one programme available. A maximum of 12 appointments can be made to programmes based at Southampton and one appointment can be made to the Functional Electrical Stimulation research in Salisbury.

Academic foundation trainees are allocated to one Trust for the entire two year programme. Please refer to the
AFP job description page to view a list of available programmes, the job description for each academic research post and the linked F1 and F2 rotations.

University Hospital Southampton Academic Programmes

At Southampton the academic posts are unbundled from the clinical rotations. At application you will be asked to rank the clinical rotation in order of preference. If you are successfully shortlisted and invited to interview you will rank your academic programme preferences.
Successful candidates will then be matched to their highest ranking available rotation and academic placement based on their performance.

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust

The academic programme at Salisbury is linked to a fixed two year programme of 6 x 4 month placements which can be viewed on our AFP job description page.
