Recognition of Trainers Courses

Recognition of Trainers courses are specifically designed to train Health Education England (Wessex) educational and named clinical supervisors to supervise trainee doctors, in line with the GMC Recognition of Trainers process.

Doctors of all specialties can train to obtain a role as an educational and/or named clinical supervisor once they reach Associate Specialist or Consultant grade. Specialist Training Registrars within 6 months of their CCT date can also train in preparation for obtaining these roles following promotion, but cannot practice until they reach the required grade.

Recognition courses

Those wishing to become a newly recognised Health Education England (Wessex) educational and named clinical supervisor should attend the two-day Recognition of Trainers: Induction for ES and NCS course. Those wishing to only gain recognition as a named clinical supervisor should attend the Recognition of Trainers: Induction for NCS.

Additional and/or re-recognition courses

Educational and named clinical supervisors are encouraged to compliment their initial learning and must complete 10 hours of CPD within five years of gaining their initial recognition, in order to update their recognition. Within these 10 hours they must attend eight hours of face-to-face CPD training.

Many Wessex trusts now provide in-house refresher training - please ask your DME for further information.

The following training courses can also be attended to compliment learning and/or contribute to the re-recognition process, once an induction course has been attended:

Joining the faculty team

Recognised educational and named clinical supervisors are invited to join the faculty team and become involved in training other supervisors. By attending the Recognition of Trainers: Faculty Development Day or facilitating on any of the Recognition of Trainers: Induction or Refresher courses, facilitators' attendance is automatically recorded and the number of CPD hours for the event contributes towards the facilitators' personal CPD training log, for their respective Educational and/or Named Clinical Supervision roles.

Other courses suitable for Educational and/or Named Clinical Supervisors

Educational and named clinical supervisors may also benefit from attending selected Leadership, Management and Personal Development courses.
